Houston lacks timely, convenient passenger train service to other cities because it is served by one of Amtrak’s least productive long-haul routes, according to a study released Friday.
The Sunset Limited, the Amtrak route connecting Los Angeles to New Orleans, is the only intercity rail route in Houston, the nation’s sixth-largest metro area. It was one of three Amtrak lines to post a ridership decrease, according to an analysis by the Brookings Institution, a Washington-based public policy group that assessed passenger rail ridership in the country’s 100 largest metro areas.
